Expert Advice on How Whirlpool Refrigerators Work
Largest and most frequently used household appliances, refrigerator are also the greatest consumers of energy in a home. It is important to take upkeep and maintain your appliance for better efficiency and longer life.
Automatic defrost
Most Whirlpool refrigerators are self-defrosting. As frost accumulates it automatically melts away
inside the refrigerator. The self-defrosting system has 3 components:
- Defrost Timer turns off the cooling system every 6 to 8 hours and turns on the refrigerator defrost heater.
- Defrost Heater is located beneath the cooling coils which are concealed behind a panel in the freezer compartment. When the heater gets hot, ice or frost build-up melts.
- Defrost Thermostat turns the defrosting process off after either the amount of time specified on the timer ends or the defrost thermostat senses that the heat near the coils has reached a specific temperature and turns off on its own.
Cooling
All residential refrigerators have these four components:

Starting device kit for compressor and components
- Compressor turns on whenever the thermostat alerts the system that it needs to start cooling.
- Condenser is located on the outside of the refrigerator so that it can use room temperature and cool the fins, dissipating the heat from the tubes.
- Metering Device or Capillary Tube is a small copper tube that by entering the evaporator controls the flow and pressure of the refrigerant.
- Refrigerant flows out of a small capillary tube causing pressure to drop as it is injected into the larger tubes . As the refrigerant expands into its gaseous state, it allows the evaporator to absorb the heat.
Temperature Control

Temperature Control
Refrigerator temperature is maintained by a thermostat. Once the set temperature is reached your unit will stop cooling.
Lighting

Incandescent Light Bulb
The incandescent light bulb is located near the refrigerator door. It is operated by a button - when the door closes, it pushes the
button to turn the light off . When the door opens, the button
automatically turns the light on.
Ice maker
The ice maker is usually independent of the other systems in
the refrigerator.

Ice Maker Assembly
Ice and water dispenser
A group of systems work together to allow delivery of ice and water through the refrigerator
door.
- Before it can be delivered through the refrigerator door, the ice maker dislodges the ice it makes into a large bin. To get the ice a lever must be pressed that activates a switch. Once the switch is turned on, the motor rotates the auger, the ice is pushed out of the bin, through a chute and to the user.
- The water dispenser works in a way similar to the ice dispenser. To get water from the refrigerator door, a lever is pressed on the front of the door that activates a switch. The switch turns on an electric water valve and then water flows through the valve and into a tube. Lastly, it then flows into a container in the refrigerator so it can be chilled.
Door seals and hinges
All refrigerator and freezer doors must have a
seal. This rubber-like gasket is attached to the door.
The colors of the seal are usually white, almond, black, or brown. The purpose of the seal
is to keep the cool air sealed inside the refrigerator and the room-temperature air sealed out.The length of the seal is lined with a
magnet, which holds the door closed and creates a tight seal.
The hinges are what allows the door to swing open and assist it in
closing. For the door to close properly, the hinges must be adjusted
correctly.
How to Install your Whirlpool Refrigerator
It is not very difficult, but very important, to install your refrigerator properly.
- To allow for proper ventilation, your refrigerator must be placed far enough from the wall.
- Your refrigerator should never be placed on electrical cords or water lines.
- Your refrigerator should always be level. The refrigerator needs to be tilted back a little bit frequently, so that the doors close by themselves.
Expert Maintenance Tips for Your Whirlpool Refrigerator
Self-defrosting refrigerators and freezers do not
need to be defrosted manually. A refrigerator
or freezer will, every 6 to 8 hours, automatically heat up its cooling coils slightly and
melt any frost that had accumulated. The water that might remain
from this process, drains into a shallow pan at the bottom of the
refrigerator. The water will
evaporate, so there is no need to empty the pan. It is a good idea to clean the pan periodically, so an odor does not develop. This can be done by detaching the lower
grill and sliding the pan out to the front of the unit.
Please Note: If you are sensitive
to mold, please consider cleaning the pan several times a year. If mold grows in the drain pan, it
can be considered a health concern .
Expert Cleaning Tips for Your Whirlpool Refrigerator
- Under your refrigerator or freezer unit, there is a set of coils and a cooling fan . These coils need to be cleaned, at least once a year. These coils look like a grate or like a wide radiator. Before you do any cleaning, be sure to unplug your refrigerator or freezer. An excellent tool for cleaning the refrigerator coils is the Refrigerator Condenser Brush.

After using the brush, it is a good idea to use your vacuum cleaner. The vacuum cleaner will remove any lint, pet hair, and other dirt from the coils.
- To help extend the life of your refrigerator (freezer), keep the gasket as well as the interior of your refrigerator or freezer clean.
- Use baking soda to control odors in your refrigerator or freezer. For tougher odors, try Fridge Aid deodorizer. All the cleaning supplies and accessories that you might need for your refrigerator or freezer can be found at RepairClinic.com.
