Expert Advice on How Whirlpool Range, Stove, Oven Works
Whirlpool combination ranges have two components: the surface burners and an oven. To understand how combination appliances work, look at the following key areas for both electric and gas options.
The Control Panel
There are a number of options for Whirlpool range and stove combinations. Because of this fact control panels will be somewhat different but most will still have the following components:
- Thermostat regulates the temperature of the range by working in conjunction with a long copper tube. By either heating or cooling, this copper tube relays the information back to the thermostat. Another type of thermostat is an electronic or mechanical type. It has a probe attached to a small circuit board behind the oven knob. The thermostat knows that it needs to adjust the temperature, when the signals are received from the probe to the knob.

Oven temperature control thermostat
- There are two kinds of clocks, a mechanical type and an electronic type. Usually, there are three dials on a mechanical clock: start time dial, stop time dial, and the clock dial. Use the start and stop dials for timed cooking and for self-cleaning selections. If they stop working, the electronic clocks need to be replaced. They are usually not fixable.
- Electronic keypad can be found in some ranges. This is a keypad that allows for setting the oven, broiler, timed bake, and self-cleaning times and temperatures. These keypads need to be replaced when they fail as they cannot be repaired.

Oven Control Board
- Selector switch for bake/broil/timed bake, etc. All electric and gas ranges have at least one control switch for the oven or broiler. With some units this can be the same switch as the thermostat while on others it is a separate switch. If it is separate, it operates in conjunction with the thermostat. One can set the thermostat to the cooking temperature desired and then set the selector switch to allow Bake, Broil, Timed Bake, etc.
- Light switches. While many stoves have a light in the oven, the light switch is usually located in the door frame of the oven. Other units have a light above the range that is operated by a light switch located in the control panel.
- Surface burner switches operate like regular dimmer switches. They allow a user to adjust the temperature setting by regulating the amount of electricity flowing through the switch to the burner.
- Self-cleaning buttons or switches. Many ovens have other related devices in addition to the clock controls for the self-cleaning features. They have a door lock button or a separate switch to toggle between self-clean and normal bake, etc.
- Convection oven components allow food to cook evenly and quickly by using a fan to circulate air and provide even temperatures throughout. By using a switch on the control panel, a user can enable/disable the convection cooking option.
The Cooktop
- Electric ranges usually have coils on top of the stove for the cook top. Coils have a wire inside of them that heats up when electricity is applied. This heating action causes the coils to glow. Burners known as "euro burners" do not glow, although they get just as hot as their counterparts. Euro burners are smooth and solid, and 6 to 8 inches in diameter. They have an internal coil in their center and no moving parts. "Smooth top" systems have the burners integrated into the top. These burners work the same way as the coil type but they are concealed under the surface.

Glass Cooktop
- Gas range top burner units use a similar system of gas delivery. There is one control knob for each burner and each is attached to a small valve that is mounted to the main gas line. When the knob is turned on, the gas flows through the valve into a "venturi" tube. This tube combines the gas with air and creates the proper mix for combustion. When this mixture flows into the burner, the standing pilot light or the igniter lights the mixture. By adjusting the burner control knob, the size of the flame is regulated. This also restricts the amount of gas flowing through the valve.

Gas Burner Assembly
The Area Beneath the Cooktop
- Electric. Many cook tops with coil burners allow the user to raise the entire cooktop when they need to be cleaned or serviced. The model and serial number tags are usually located beneath the cooktop.
- Gas. Many cook tops that have non-sealed gas burners allow the user to raise the cooktop when they need to be cleaned and serviced. The individual burner gas valves and ignition components may be located there also. This is also where the model and serial number tags are usually found.
The Area Behind the Broiler Drawer
The safety valve, spark igniter, fuse, and other components are often located behind the broiler drawer on gas ovens.

The Back of the Unit
A lot of the wiring for electric and for gas ovens is located on the back of the appliances. The steel panels that cover the wiring protect the user from danger and the wiring from damage. Other components, such as relays, self-cleaning switches, transformers, and terminal blocks, are also located behind the protective back panels.
Expert Maintenance Tips for Your Whirlpool Range, Stove, Oven
- Control panels in most ranges, stoves or ovens are made of glass and/or painted metal. Non-abrasive cleaners should be used on these surfaces.
Note: It is better not to spray cleaners directly onto the control panel. Place some cleaner on a soft, damp rag, then wipe the surface.
- Cook tops made of porcelain should be cleaned with a non-abrasive cleanser. RepairClinic.com provides all the cleansers and accessories you need for all your cooking appliances.
- Burner drip pans or bowls, usually need to be replaced every 2 to 3 years. They are located beneath the grates on a gas stove or range and beneath the heating element on an electric stove or range. Once they are stained, it is usually very difficult to clean them completely. Keep in mind that this might affect the stove's cooking efficiency.
- Knob care is important. It is safe to clean the knobs with a little dish detergent and a damp rag. If the numbers or lettering have worn away, you may want to replace the knobs.
- Light bulbs are easy to replace, although you may need to remove a glass covering or dome to reach it. Most interior oven lights use a universal 40 watt appliance bulb.
- Oven cleaning. It is best to consult your owner's manual for instructions on how to use the self-cleaning feature on your oven. This feature is activated by heating the interior of the oven to a temperature so hot that it incinerates the residue of anything left in the oven. It is usually not a good idea to clean the interior of a self-cleaning oven with a spray cleaner. Again, it is best to refer to your owner's manual or contact the manufacturer of your oven to be certain. in order to clean a non-self-cleaning oven, use one of the many oven cleaners that are available at various stores. RepairClinic.com has a wide selection.
- Burner Elements, and the heating elements inside of them will eventually burn out. Sometimes, when this happens, one can see the coil burns, blisters and bubbles. Once your heating element burns out, you have to replace it. Heating elements are not repairable. When replacing the burner elements, it is advisable to change the infinite switch that controls them at the same time. All replacement parts can be found at RepairClinic.com.
